BLOG REVIEW: Never The Bride by Charlotte Fallowfield

TITLE: Never The Bride
SERIES; Dilbury Village #1
AUTHOR: Charlotte Fallowfield
PUBLICATION: February 28th, 2017 by Charlotte Fallowfield

MY RATING: 5 STARS

Abbie Carter felt doomed as she clutched her bouquet and started walking up the aisle. Again. She felt like she was stuck in some kind of Groundhog Day wedding nightmare. Always the bridesmaid, never the bride. Eight dresses, most of them hideous, were already stuffed in her attic space. She had more bridesmaid dresses than relationships. Was she really that unlucky in love? She despaired of ever finding her soul mate and was convinced that if she packed away dress thirteen in her attic, she’d never get to wear the coveted white one and have her happy ever after.
That was until she locked eyes with one of the handsome ushers, whose wink turned her elegant and well-practiced glide up the aisle into a flailing Bambi-on-ice spectacle. Miller Davis was the first man in forever to make her heart skip a beat, as well as her legs turn to jelly. And, for once, her interest in a man didn’t seem to be one-sided. It was just a shame that the Atlantic Ocean separated them. Abbie couldn’t even make a relationship with her elderly fat pooch, Sumo, work, so what chance did she have with a permanent New Yorker? Her best friend, Georgie, told her to ignore the miles that separated her from Miller and to go for it, saying that true love knew no bounds.
Was Abbie fated to always be the bridesmaid, or would her wish for the perfect day with the man of her dreams ever come true?
While Never The Bride will be a standalone story, it's the first in the Dilbury Village series of romantic comedy novels. All of them will be set in the quaint fictitious English hamlet in the Shropshire countryside, but feature a different village couples' story.

ARC received from the author in exchange for an honest review

Charlotte Fallowfield has once again exceeded my expectations.

Never The Bride is a Romantic Comedy at its best, funny, romantic and heartwarming. All good emotions, bottled up in a book.

I’ve laughed so hard at some point that my family thought I was crazy. And then I’ve cried, and smiled again.

I’ve loved Abbie Carter, our heroine, because she is not the clumsy girl I’ve expected her to be. She is quite the opposite: beautiful (even if she didn’t see her like that), very smart, funny, friendly and with a big heart. So big that she doesn’t even care that her unconditional love for her grumpy, farting dog, Mr. Sumo is not reciprocated.

And for each heroine there is an hero: Miller Davis. He’s gorgeous and very rich, but despite his money he loves his privacy and keeping a low profile. He’s not the typical Alpha man-I’m rich-I’m powerful. I’ve loved his sweetness and sense of humor.

Abbie is English, Miller is American, and it’s really funny when he misunderstands British words.

Never The Bride has secondary characters that have a leading role in completing the story. They are as important as the main characters. There is Georgie, Abbie’s best friend and Daphne, a sweet and wise old woman and Abbie’s neighbor. A well sorted trio, with such a strong bond that they are more family than friends. But in this first book of Dilbury Village series, the author introduces some other ones that I hope to see in future installment of this series like Lord Kirkland, Charlie, Quinn and Heath.

What makes this book so great are not only the hilarious scenes about a farting dog riding a train, horny dolphins, flying turds, Winnie the Pooh and pink scooter, but it’s the whole new world that Charlotte Fallowfield has create. A world named Dilbury.

The description of this little village and their resident are so vivid and real that it’s like to be there, to live their story, to breath the fine air of the British countryside.

I miss you Dilbury, I want to be back soon!

Length: 61,269 words

During a golf tournament in Virginia, American golfer Reggie Weston meets Russell Lee, the British former world champion in the sport. The two men hit it off when Russell takes Reggie under his wing, teaching him the tricks of the game.

As their friendship deepens, Reggie finds himself falling in love with the Englishman, though he knows Russell doesn’t feel the same. He’s painfully aware of the fact that Russell isn’t gay.

But there’s more to Russell than meets the eye. He’s a troubled soul, plagued by monsters in his head telling him who he should be. He’s spent most of his life hiding his sexuality from the world so he won’t disappoint his homophobic mother.

Is seven days enough time for Russell to break through the years of hurt and accept the new direction fate has in store for him and Reggie?

MY RATING: 4 STARS

ARC RECEIVED FROM THE AUTHOR IN EXCHANGE FOR AN HONEST REVIEW

I’ve met Cristina Bruni at the MM Romance meeting in Italy last year. She was there with her book Sette Giorni, but I don’t know why (maybe I’ve already spent all my money?) I didn’t buy her book. Maybe was only fate, I was simply waiting for her to translate the book in English.

I really love sport romance, if MM romance even better. I’ve read sport romance about soccer, basket, baseball, football, hockey, rugby, skating, gymnastic, tennis… never golf! So a book out of the ordinary, sweet and romantic.

Cristina’s writing is engaging with a natural flow that captured my heart. Sometime it was like I was there on that golf course, feeling the tension and the joy of the tournament, connecting deeply with the characters.

Speaking about characters: I loved them very much!

Reginald Weston, Reggie, is a golf player, young and openly gay. He is at his first important tournament, everything is new to him and exciting, but what is making his hurt beat so fast is Russull Lee, the champion, his hero and wet dream. Their first encounter begins in the wrong way, but between them something clicked. Russull seems to be pulled to Reggie and teaching him some golf trick (OMG, I loved the dantian breathing scene!) will bring them on a new level. For Reggie and Russ is like a turning point in their lives.

Reggie is going to see what to be a champion really means and Russull is forced to face his demons.
Reggie is very shy, sometime too much, blushing frequently. I find that sweet, but under Reggie’s insecurities there is a young boy very strong and determined. He doesn’t hide his sexuality, and being gay and a sport player can be a challenge. And he is not afraid of that. I loved how he faced the final round of the tournament, scared as hell but with the presence of mind to be focused on such important event that could change his life. To be unconfident and scare is not always a bad thing, as for Reggie, it can brings out your passion and resolution. This is how I see Reginald: a sweet puppy tiger.

Russell is Reggie opposite. Strong and confident, nothing seems to scare him, on and outside the green. But who is the real Russ? He is a man facing his demons and, as in real life, he has reached his crossroad,  the point in life where you are forced to fight them if you want to live. His crossroad is Reggie.

There were moments where I would have yelled at Reggie, telling him to stop being so shy and I would have yelled at Russ because he can be real asshole.

Their story is sweet, one that can break your heart and make you cry. I loved the way the author turned the events in order to give them what they deserve.

What I’ve loved about the book, apart from Reggie and Russ? The settings. The golf club in Virginia and Wimbledon. The first setting is well pictured and I had the feeling to be there on that green together with the golf players. The second one, Wimbledon, just for the good memories that place brings to my mind. Okay, I loved also some sexy scene… Russ and Reggie in the kitchen… (don’t go there, don’t go there).

If there is a criticism to the author I would say that Reggie would have been an amazing character even if he hasn’t blushed so much.

In the Epilogue I sensed a taste of mystery… Now, dear Cristina, I’m waiting for a sequel.

Excerpt

The Englishman beat him at pool, winning both matches. Reggie wasn’t upset, though, as every moment of their evening together was delicious. Everything apart from the beers Russell drank one after another, until he got so drunk, Reggie decided it was time to return to the resort.

“Tomorrow you have a tournament to win,” Reggie reminded him, pulling him out of the bar with difficulty. The silvery rays of the smiling moon lit the boardwalk, giving it a magical atmosphere.

“I won’t win any tournament tomorrow,” the Englishman murmured, gritting his teeth as he stopped in the middle of the road.

Reggie pushed him across the same moment a car zoomed by, blaring music.

“If you don’t rest a little, you won’t win anything,” he admonished, like a brother. Then he nervously massaged his cheek. He wasn’t accustomed to feeling it covered with hair.

“You can’t wait to shave?” Russell asked.

“No, no. It’s just that…I’m not used to it. But do I look good, at least?” he wanted to know.

The Englishman chuckled. “I already told you I won’t answer until tomorrow.”

A second later Reggie found himself holding car keys. “And these?” he asked, giving them an interrogative look.

“You drive, if you want us both to play tomorrow,” the Englishman said.

“Oh…okay,” Reggie stuttered, as if it was the first time he saw a car key in his life.

Russell fell into the passenger side seat and completely opened the window, putting his elbow out, then resting his head on it. He remained in that position until they reached the resort.

From time to time, the notes of the Nickelback rock song “How You Remind Me” cradling them both, Reggie gave him admiring looks. His long hair, now free, danced in the wind. The way he sat made the veins in his neck tense like cords, and Reggie stared at his strong profile, his long, light eyelashes…

God, what he would do to lay his lips on that face and give it little kisses?

They stopped at a traffic light just before reaching the resort. Reggie kept his eyes fixed on the red light, because they had already strayed too much to Russell’s face.

“What was your parents’ reaction when you told them?”

Reggie turned, surprised. Russell had spoken without moving a muscle, apart from his lips.

“Told them what?” “That you’re gay.”

Oh, that…

“Not much,” Reggie explained with a chuckle. “My father pretended to be upset for less than ten minutes and then he hugged me. Mom told me she was a little sorry because she wouldn’t have any grandchild to take care of, but she could accept it if I didn’t bring home too many buff guys.” It was clear that binge drinking was making Russell ask strange questions…

Sitting back, Russell started, “When Daniel, the friend I told you about, came out…”

They entered the tree-lined resort path and Reggie hung on every word, waiting for Russell to finish his sentence.

“…my mother ordered me not to go out with him anymore. She told me she thanked God I wasn’t like him, or I could never return home.”

Reggie stopped the car in surprise. “Shit, Russell,” popped out of his mouth.

The Englishman gave him an inscrutable look.

“I mean,” Reggie continued, lightning his tone, “I don’t want to seem rude, but it’s just that…well, it seems your mother is a little, well…”

“Harsh?” Russell asked ironically.

“Let’s say that,” he agreed, driving again.

He’d have liked to add a thousand other things and ask more, but he felt scared. Russell had just given up a part of himself, a little window into his past that maybe not everybody knew, and Reggie felt intimidated. He wanted to know more, but at the same time, he feared reopening old wounds that needed to heal.

“I’m sorry,” was all he said. “Me, too.”

They parked behind the cabana and Reggie helped Russell get out of the car.

“I’m fine,” Russell murmured. “No,” Reggie said, “you’re drunk.”

Russell tried walking on his own but stumbled on the sidewalk as soon as he stepped onto it.

“Okay, maybe it’s better if you help me, Weston.” Supporting Russell, Reggie slid an arm around his side.

His body was warm against Reggie’s, and he hugged Russell in a sort of leaning embrace. It was a delicious sensation, and for a moment, Reggie dreamed of what it would feel like to Russell him again and again, maybe on a frigid winter afternoon in front of a fireplace, or on a hot summer night on the beach.

They passed in front of the tiki bar without caring what others might think. From the speakers around the pool blared Eminem’s hit song, “The Monster.”

At the door to Russell’s cabana, he searched his pockets to find his keycard. When he tried to insert it, he missed. He tried again, but he was too drunk. Finally he gave up and handed the keycard to Reggie without looking over. Reggie followed the silent order, like a good little soldier.

The cabana greeted them with silent darkness, lit only by the rays of the setting sun that shown through the open door.

Again, there was no trace of Danielle, not even her perfume lingering in the air.

Russell threw himself on the bed and toed off his shoes. “Do you hear this music, Reggie?” he whispered, rolling onto his back.

Reggie had remained by the door, not sure what to do. Go or stay? His mind suggested he leave, but his heart wanted to stay.

“Yeah, it’s Eminem,” he answered, putting his hands in his pockets.

“Open the window a little, please. I want to hear the words.” Reggie obeyed, closing the door and opening the window.

A light breeze roused him, adding melancholy to melancholy.

At the window, Reggie studied the bar and swimming pool, because looking at Russell, drunk and lying in bed, was unbearable.

Unbearable and wonderful.

BLOG REVIEW: Falling For Grace by Gloria Herrmann

TITLE: Falling For Grace
SERIES: The Devil's Darlings Series book #1
AUTHOR: Gloria Herrmann
PUBLICATION: December 20th by Author Gloria Herrmann

MY RATING: 5 STARS

Grace’s family didn’t exactly get into the Christmas spirit, and she was dying to see what all the fuss was about. She wanted to drown herself in eggnog and hot chocolate, stuff herself full of sugar cookies and gingerbread. Grace longed to sing carols and sneak sweet kisses under the mistletoe. Didn’t she deserve a chance at a little holiday romance?

More than anything, she wanted to experience the most wonderful time of the year, even if that meant she had to escape Hell. The consequences just might be worth it.

Aidan was dreading the holidays. After a year filled with heartbreak, all that holly jolly nonsense wasn’t offering much appeal. Scrooge had the right idea to work straight through the Christmas season. A veterinarian in downtown Seattle, Aidan would much rather spend the holidays with his furry patients. But, his sister has other plans for him.
When he unexpectedly crosses paths with a pretty blonde, he is suddenly filled with more than the Christmas spirit. Is his heart ready to love someone so special?

The holidays are about to become very merry.

ARC received from the author in exchange for an honest review

I totally loved this book! A mix between a fairy tale, a romance and true life.
The storyline is apparently simple: Grace lives in a family that is not “usual” and doesn’t like Christmas time. She decides to escape from home, Hell, to experience the real Christmas spirit on Earth. Here, she will find more than she expected: a man, a new loving family, Love.
What makes this story so special? It’s special because through the lines, the reader will find the eternal battle between Devil and God, between faith and unbelief, good and bad, hate and love, father and son. The conflict between sibling.
Have you ever been torn about making the right choice, or forced to choose between doing what you think is right and what your heart wants? This is what happens to Grace and Aiden.
This book is romantic, even funny, with a little bit of magical.
Gloria’s writing style is always flowing, spontaneous. In this book Grace sometimes address herself to the readers, making them feel part of the story.
Christmas time is over, but it’s not too late to read this beautiful book.

To find love and happiness you need to open your heart to faith and truly believe that miracles sometimes happen.

I can't wait to read Faith and Hope stories.

The Book

Officer Finn Hallan has never run from a fight. With Niall’s life and love at stake, he’s not about to start now…

Finn Hallan is a member of the elite Norwegian Emergency Response Unit, code name Delta. When the team is sent to respond to a hostage situation on a Oil Platform in the Norwegian Sea, he has to face demons he thought he had buried a long time ago.

Scottish engineer Niall Faulkner’s skills in oil platform decommissioning takes him to the Forseti platform at the worst possible time. When he’s captured by terrorists, his only thought is that he will never get to tell his lover how he really feels.

Can Finn keep Niall alive? Or will they both die at the hands of hijackers in the frigid waters of the Norwegian sea?

Excerpt

Chapter 1

The call came in just past fourteen hundred hours, Erik beating him to ops by about two seconds, both men pulling on vests and arranging holsters.

Finn had been reading, spending the quiet down time before dinner trying to get his head around some of the shit that had gone down today. Time at the Urskar training facility was hard work but it wasn’t hard physical work that was bugging Finn. He knew exactly what it was.

Niall.

They’d talked this morning; he was working on the Forseti platform in the Heidrun oilfield for the next few weeks. They wouldn’t be seeing each other for a while, and that was fine. Finn was good with that. Of course, he didn’t like the fact Finn was flying in this weather. The storm passing through near the Forseti platform was a big one. And yes, he had to admit to himself he’d checked. And that was the problem. He’d checked the storm, he’d worried about the flight, and he was already missing the feisty, nerdy, sexy engineer enough to have it consuming his thoughts. All the what-ifs and the whens, and mostly the whys. He didn’t usually do serious, but Niall could make him change his mind. One guy with a soft voice and a wicked mouth comes along and suddenly Finn was losing control of his touch but don’t keep policy.

Then, this morning he’d fucked up. Big time.

He hadn’t been paying attention and he’d seriously blown things in training. He’d let his guard down and got a helmet full of pink dye with a spot-on head shot from a crowing Erik. It wasn’t so much the kill shot, it was why Finn had been distracted. He’d been thinking about Niall, and not in the I want to fuck that sideways kind of way, but in an I hope he’s okay and I’ll miss him kind of way.

Then Erik had to go and manage to kill him. It was the first time Erik had ever gotten the drop on Finn in training. It had taken three hair washes and vigorous scrubbing to get the pink out of his hair and off his left temple.

Fucker.

When they reached the briefing room Erik grinned at him, that shit-eating grin that told Finn he wouldn’t be living it down that Erik’s team had taken first blood in the mini war game they were taking part in. The grin didn’t last long, subsiding as soon as Cap walked in. After all, it didn’t matter what had happened this morning; now they were all about whatever had caused them to be alerted.

“About thirty minutes ago four bodies were found at the Grane oil terminal, identified as security assigned to the NorsDev Forseti Platform.”

Cap stared straight at Finn and for a brief moment Finn wasn’t really understanding the words. Then one thing hit him square in the chest. Forseti. That was where Niall was.

Rising to his feet he didn’t know what to say as fear gripped him. “Four?”

“We have reason to believe these four men were replaced so that a team of hijackers could get onto Forseti.”

“That’s being decom’d.” Erik sounded puzzled. “What kind of collateral does an empty oil platform have?”

“Only four?” Finn interjected. “What about the engineers? Niall Faulkner and his brother Ewan?”

Erik looked up at him and Finn could see the moment the information made sense in his head.

“Fuck. Niall is on Forseti?”

“Both of them… Niall and Ewan. Did they go? Does someone know if he…?” The rest of the team all stared at him, Cap included, and Finn realized he was coming off as a mad man. He subsided. No one could get information out if Finn was raving like a fucking lovesick moron.

“The pilots are back, they took one engineer and four security replacements. So, souls on the platform are one engineer, six skeleton crew, and the four security replacements. Eleven souls in all.”

The bottom fell out of Finn and dread stole his breath. Was it Niall or Ewan on Forseti? With who? Terrorists?

“Intel is showing no communications, or demands, but chatter has it that this is an isolated cell connected to the Hofstad Network out of Denmark.” Cap slid his finger on the laptop and the screen changed behind him to show four faces. Three fair-haired, one dark, all in fatigues with long addendums at the bottom of the photo. Ex-Marine, one former SAS. The names a blur. Except for one.

Svein Roberg.

“He’s dead,” Erik said in disbelief, echoing Finn’s thoughts exactly. Roberg had a long history of fighting the good fight for whichever side paid him most. Ex-Special Forces, he had finally been taken down by the ERU two years before, just after Finn joined the team. In fact, it had been Finn who faced him down after tracking him to a small holding in Alta. They’d chased him to the Alta Dam, where the murdering fucker had died.

The bastard had tried extortion in the name of environmental concern and had killed three oil workers in an explosion at one of the dry land containment depots. Finn would never forget Svein’s face. He didn’t even fight when Erik and Finn had him cornered, simply dropped his weapon and raised his hands.

In the best traditions of all grandstanding bad guys he laughed then said, “I live to fight another day,” repeating this over and over as he fell to his knees. There had been madness in his words, and cunning in his silver eyes. Only when Finn had stepped forward did the madness manifest in a blur of motion, the two men grappling for the weapon and a bullet leaving Finn’s gun and carving into Svein’s neck, blood spurting. Time had slowed and Finn had watched in horror and a curious fascination as the terrorist leaped in a grotesque twist of muscles over the dam wall and down into the churning water below.

“They never found his body,” Finn said softly. But Finn hadn’t cared then. The fucker had a bullet in his neck and had fallen over six hundred feet. He had to have been dead.

“Until four weeks ago his file was silent, but chatter indicated there was movement and he was implicated right in the center of it all.”

“And no one thought to brief us?” Finn demanded hotly. “Why the fuck not?”

Several others in the team, Erik included, added their alarm.

Cap held up a hand and quieted the room. “Wheels up in ten,” he said.

And that was it. They knew nothing. They didn’t know why Forseti was the platform involved or why Svein Roberg had shown up. But, whatever information they received, they would be ready for action when they knew what the hell to do.

Erik grabbed his arm as Finn made to leave. “Finn?” he asked. The question was loaded. It was, are you sure you’re okay, do you know the man you’ve been seeing is on Forseti, and can you handle this, all wrapped up in one word.

Finn nodded. Didn’t matter how he felt or what he actually said to voice any of it, he was going with the team and he wasn’t putting doubt in Erik’s head.

“Let’s get this done.”

NEW RELEASE & BLOG REVIEW: Hard Hitter by Sarina Bowen

TITLE: Hard HitterSERIES: Brooklyn Bruisers #2AUTHOR: Sarina BowenPUBLICATION: January 3rd 2017
MY RATING: 5 STARS

He’s a fighter in the rink, but he’s about to learn that playing nice can help you score...

As team captain and enforcer, Patrick O'Doul puts the bruise in the Brooklyn Bruisers. But after years of hard hits, O'Doul is feeling the burn, both physically and mentally. He conceals his pain from his coach and trainers, but when his chronic hip injury becomes too obvious to ignore, they send him for sessions with the team’s massage therapist.

After breaking up with her long-term boyfriend, Ari Bettini is in need of peace of mind. For now, she’s decided to focus on her work: rehabilitating the Bruisers’ MVP. O'Doul is easy on the eyes, but his reaction to her touch is ice cold. Ari is determined to help O'Doul heal, but as the tension between them turns red hot, they both learn that a little TLC does the body good...

Another 5 STARS book from Sarina Bowen. I loved the story and the characters.

The storyline in engaging there is love, action and a bit of mystery.

I love sport in general but I'm not an hockey follower so I like to discover through Sarina's book this sport requires powerful skills and in some of its rules "rough" and hard. I like how Sarin Bowen get the readers into this sport not using too much technical words, but using her heart and passion to speak.

Patrick O'Doule is the team captain, the "veteran" and he fears to be dismissed for a younger player. Professional sport can be selective, insensitive, focused only to reach a specific goal disregarding all the other human aspects in the process. But the Bruisers Team is different, the bond between the players is strong but not always easy. Since the first book in this series I wouldn't have believed that Patrick "the bear", the unsocial, would turn into something totally different: sweet, friendly, caring. That's the power of love that can change people in better.

And for Patrick love has the shape, is personified in Ariana Bettini, Ari for the Bruisers team. She's the yoga teacher and physiotherapist of the team. Getting attached to a player is not an option for her. Her abusive ex-boyfriend has left her scared and insecure. She doesn't want a new relationship but the attraction to Patrick is powerful. With him she feels safe.

As their relationship grows some unfortunate events and potential scandal try to tear them apart.

Some nasty turns of events make the story authentic, touching real topics in the world of sport.

And I was surprised (already told I'm not a hockey follower) and shocked to read about the physical and emotional toll a hockey player had to pay, I didn't know that an Enforcer is forged, not only in a player but in a fighter also. And every time Patrick was fighting on the ice I really feared for him.

So a great story, great characters and great sex... tantric sex!

I loved the feeling of support between all the characters, teammates and friends.

Nate Kattenberger, the Bruisers owner, is still a mystery to me and I really hope that something will happen in the future between him and Becca.

Sarina Bowen's writing style is unique, powerful and engaging, never predictable.
A must read!
